Class Plays by Eugene Schwartz: Nine Complete Scripts on a Single Download
Since 1982, when he wrote his first class play for his first graders, through the present day, Eugene Schwartz's class plays are the most widely-performed in the English-speaking world. "Roma/Amor," the sixth-grade play that is most popular of his creations, has been produced over a thousand times since its premiere in 1987. Although these plays have enough parts to cast the largest class, and enough movement and action to suit even a boy-heavy class, teachers of smaller classes will find that they are easily adaptable -- and, in most cases, girls don't have to portray men!
Grade One: The Nixie of the Mill Pond
Adapted from the Brothers Grimm. Most lines are spoken by the class chorus, but there are several parts for individual students. About 20 minutes long.

There are small choral parts, but this play reflects the 3rd graders' ability to take on longer individual roles. Characters include God and four Archangels, Noah, his sons, their wives, rowdy towns-children, and the animals. In the original production the entire first and second grades took part as well. About 40 minutes long.
A Spanish translation of this play is included.

Grade Five: Themistocles and the Persian War
The quarrels of the Olympian gods are reflected in the earthly battle of the Persian Empire's vast armies and the upstart navy of Athens. Only Themistocles can save the day, and not in the way we might expect. Many roles for a large class, and a lot of bravura altogether. The lead role is the most challenging part for a boy in any Waldorf drama. About 75 minutes long.

Grade Seven: Eleanor the Queen
An epic presentation of the long and eventful life of Eleanor of Aquitaine, this play calls for a lot of preparation and rehearsal time. The language and situations in which Eleanor finds herself may be too mature for some classes -- and the role of Eleanor is by far the most demanding girl's part in any Waldorf school play. Some teachers hold off on this until Grade 8. About two hours long.
